Cookies
These cookies are perfect for
decorating your tree with... unless you have a pet who will eat them on
you! By using holiday cookie cutters and coloured frosting, you can
create your own festive decorations... that you won't have to worry
about packing away again! 
Tools and utensils you will need:
- Mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
- Electric beater
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Plastic wrap
- Rolling pin
- Holiday-shaped cookie cutters
- Food colouring
- Toothpick
- Cookie baking sheet
- Thin holiday ribbon cut into about 4-inch/10-cm
lengths
Ingredients you will
need to make 1 serving:
- 1 cup/250 mL butter or
margarine, softened
- 1 cup/250 mL sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp/5 mL Watkins Original Double Strength
Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Watkins Almond Extract
- 2 tbsp/30 mL milk
- 2-1/2 cups/625 mL all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp/5 mL Watkins Baking
Powder
Frosting:
- 4 cups/1 liter powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup/125 mL butter or margarine, softened
- 3 to 4 tbsp/45 to 60 mL milk
- 1 to 2 tsp/ 5 to 10 mL Watkins Extracts
to taste
- Food coloring, if desired
Instructions:
- Combine butter, sugar, egg,
extracts, and milk in large bowl.
- Stir in flour and baking
powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm
(about 2 hours).
- Heat oven to 400 F/205 C - be sure to get
your adult assistant to help you turn on the oven.
- On lightly floured surface, roll dough one
third at a time to 1/4-inch/5-mm thickness.
- Cut with floured cookie cutter.
- Using a toothpick, poke a small hole about
1/4-inch/10-mm down from the top of each cookie so you can thread a
small piece of ribbon through for hanging on your tree.
- Place 1 inch/25 mm apart on ungreased cookie
sheets.
- Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are
light brown. Immediately remove to wire rack to cool.
Frosting:
- Combine all ingredients; beat until
smooth.
- To make different colours, divide frosting into
as many small bowls as you want to make colours.
- When the cookies are fully cooled, decorate
each one as you wish.
- When the icing has hardened, string the ribbon
through the small hole in the top of the cookie and hang on your
Christmas tree, in your window, or even on a small tree branch as a
centerpiece for your table. Let your imagination take off with all
the possibilities you can think of.
Peanut Butter
Balls These are not only a delicious Holiday Cookie, they are also great as a high-energy treat - and they are so quick and easy to make that you will want to enjoy them the whole year through!  Here are the tools and utensils you will
need:
Measuring cups
- Mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
Here are the ingredients
you will need to make several dozen balls:
- 1 cup/250 mL non-fat dry milk
powder
- 3/4 cup/180 mL chunky or smooth
peanut butter
- 1/4 cup/60 mL honey
Directions:
- Put the dry milk, peanut butter,
and honey into the mixing bowl and mix well together.
- Cool the mixture in the
refrigerator for about one hour.
- With clean hands, roll small
amounts of the mixture into small balls.
- Put all the peanut butter balls
into a covered container and store in the refrigerator.
Melt
1/2 cup/125 mL chocolate bits with 1 tablespoon/15 mL milk in a small
pan over low heat on the stove or in a glass bowl in the microwave.
Dip the peanut butter balls into the melted chocolate, then set them
chocolate-side up on a plate and serve! Mmm, mmm
