Carbolic Acid & natural
essential oils combine in a petroleum base to provide quick
relief and antiseptic treatment of cuts, scrapes, burns and
bites + unique drawing action for pimples, boils, slivers,
etc.!
Watkins Petro Carbo Salve was
introduced by J. R. Watkins in 1888. The famous "black salve"
contained carbolic acid (used to sterilize medical
instruments) and essential oils in a petrolatum base. Now that
the petrolatum is more refined, there is no black colour, but
the effectiveness and distinctive, nostalgic aroma are just as
they always were.
Over the years Watkins Petro Carbo
Salve has been known by many "popular" names including: black
salve, antiseptic salve, drawing salve, brown salve, healing
salve, black drawing salve, draw out salve, boil drawing
salve, carbolic salve, black ointment, udder balm, bag balm,
teat salve and cow salve -- just to mention a few!
Watkins Petro Carbo Salve is
a protective, soothing, topical dressing that is safe and
effective for relieving the pain and itching associated with
minor burns, skin irritations, scrapes, cuts and non-venemous
insect bites.
Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve has the unique ability to draw out splinters, slivers, boils and pimples.
"We enjoy our woodstove
all winter, but we know we will get at least one burn during
the season. That's why we keep a tin of Watkins Petro Carbo
Salve handy, just in case. It has been a wonderful relief on
many an occassion (too many!)."
We heard that many years ago you could
easily tell the rich farmer from the poor farmer. The rich
farmer kept a can of Petro Carbo Salve in the house for the
family and one in the barn for the cattle. The poor farmer
carried his one tin back and forth between the house and the
barn!"
