Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.  We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

Teddy Bear Puddings

This is fun and tasty - and you can make polar bears by substituting Watkins Vanilla Dessert Mix for the Chocolate! (Remember to also reduce the amount of sugar by 2 tbsp/30 ml)   Smile

Ingredients you will need to make 8 pudding bears:
  • 1/4 cup/60 ml Watkins Chocolate Dessert Mix
  • 1/3 cup/80 ml sugar
  • Watkins Recipe - Teddy Bear Puddings1/4 cup/60 ml water
  • 1-1/4 cups/185 ml milk
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml miniature marshmallows
  • 8 single serve prepared graham cracker crusts
  • 16 vanilla wafers (for ears)
  • 16 chocolate chips or candy-coated milk chocolate candies (for eyes)
  • 24 miniature marshmallows (3 for each nose)
  • 4 red jelly candy rings (cut in half for the mouth)
Instructions:
  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine Chocolate Dessert Mix, sugar, water and milk. Microwave on HIGH for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes, until mixture begins to bubble and get thick.
  2. Remove from microwave and stir in marshmallows. Stir until they are completely dissolved.
  3. With a soup ladle, carefully spoon the pudding into the graham cracker crusts.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand on counter until cold or cover and refrigerate until cold.
  5. Just before you're ready to serve, add the vanilla wafers for ears, chocolate chips or candy-coated milk chocolate candies for eyes, marshmallows for nose, and candy for mouth.

QuestionWhy do you have to stir foods cooked in a microwave oven?
Many microwave recipes telly you to stir the food occasionally. Stirring equalizes the temperature in the food and shortens the cooking time. Stir from the outside to the center of the dish to make sure the temperature is the same throughout.

Molding Clay

Let your imagination run wild! You'll have hours of fun making things from this easy-to-make clay.

Ingredients you will need:
  • 2 cups/500 ml baking soda (1 pound/354 g box)
  • 1 cup/250 ml cornstarch
  • 1-1/4 cups/185 ml water
Instructions:
  1. In a medium-size saucepan, combine the baking soda and cornstarch.
  2. Add the cold water and mix well. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
  3. Carefully turn the mixture onto a plate, cover with a damp cloth and let the mixture cool enough so that you can handle it.
  4. Place on the piece of waxed paper and knead until smooth.
  5. Use right away or store in a well-sealed container.
Tip!Use this clay to make ornaments, for molding into shapes, or forming pottery! This clay can also be rolled thin and cut with cookie cutters. Allow the molded objects to dry at room temperature, on a flat surface at least overnight and up to 3 days, depending on how large the object is. You can then paint or decorate your objects as desired. You can even glue on different objects like buttons, yarn, ribbon, etc.!  Smile
