Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook. 
We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!



Vegetable Roll-Ups
You won't mind eating your veggies in these tasty roll-ups!  Take them to school or enjoy them as an after-school snack.

Watkins Recipe - Vegetable Roll-UpsIngredients you will need to make 12 servings:
  • 1 tub (8 oz/227 g) spreadable cream cheese 
  • 2 tbsp/30 ml Watkins Garden Vegetable Snack & Dip Mix or Garlic & Dill Dip Mix
  • 1 tsp/5 ml  Watkins Onion Flakes
  • 6 (7-inch/18 cm) tortillas or wraps
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml shredded carrot
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml finely chopped broccoli
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml finely chopped cauliflower
Instructions:
  1. With a rubber spatula, remove cream cheese from the container and place in a bowl; let it stand at room temperature until it is soft enough to stir.
  2. Add the Garden Vegetable Dip Mix and the Onion Flakes to the cream cheese; mix together well.  With a metal spatula or butter knife, spread evenly over the tortillas. 
  3. Sprinkle with carrot, broccoli and cauliflower. 
  4. Roll up each tortilla as tightly as possible; wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until serving time.
  5. Cut each roll in half before serving or packing for lunch.

Tip!For lunch, wrap in plastic wrap and place in an insulated lunch box to keep fresh and cool.


Spicy Raisin Oatmeal Mix

This hot cereal will get you off to a good start on cool autumn mornings and even the coldest of winter mornings, too!  If you want, you can package it into individual servings so it's quick and easy when you're busy getting ready for school.

Ingredients you will need to make 12 servings:
  • Chef4 cups/1000 ml quick-cooking rolled oats (oatmeal)
  • 1 cup/250 ml dry milk powder
  • 1 cup/250 ml raisins (see the tip below)
  • 1/4 cup/60 ml brown sugar
  • 1 tsp/5 ml Watkins Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp/1.2 ml Watkins Nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp/1.2 ml Watkins Ginger
  • 1/4 tsp/1.2 ml Watkins Allspice
  • 1/2 tsp/2.5 ml salt (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Place all the ingredients in a large zipper-lock plastic bag or a large air-tight storage container or jar.
  2. Shake the container to mix it all up.
  3. To make one serving on the stovetop - In a small saucepan, bring 3/4 cup/180 ml hot water to a boil; stir in 1/2 cup/125 ml of the oatmeal mixture.  Reduce the heat to low.  Cook and stir for one minute.  Let it stand for one minute before serving.  Place the oatmeal in a bowl and add milk and sugar - or maple syrup, or any other toppings you like - as desired.
  4. To make one serving in the microwave - In a microwave-safe bowl, add 3/4 cup/180 ml water.  Microwave the water on HIGH for 2 to 3 minutes until it is boiling.  Stir in 1/2 cup/125 ml of the oatmeal mixture.  Microwave again on HIGH for 30 to 45 seconds longer.  Let stand for one minute before serving.  Add milk and sugar - or maple syrup, or any other toppings you like - as desired.
