Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.  We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

  4. Slowly sprinkle on the sugar mixture, tossing to coat all sides. Spread the mixture on paper toweling to cool.
  5. When cool, place the cereal mixture in a large bowl. Add the raisins and chocolate pieces; toss to mix.
  6. Store in a tightly sealed container or a large zipper-lock plastic bag.

QuestionWhat is beating, folding, stirring, mixing, whisking and tossing?

Beat: To mix ingredients over and over again with a spoon until all the ingredients are incorporated. Cake batters, brownie batters and whipped cream are usually beaten.

Fold: To gently combine a delicate mixture with a heavier one. A whisk or rubber spatula is usually used in and over-and-under motion. For example, you would fold whipped cream into cream cheese when making a cheese cake.

Stirring and Mixing: To combine ingredients evenly in a circular motion, using a fork, spoon or rubber scraper. Stews, soups, and anything that gets stirred would be done this way.

Whisk: To use a wire whisk to beat air into your mixture. You whip in a circular motion, very hard and quickly. Eggs can be whisked to make a fluffy omelet.

Toss: To mix ingredients lightly with a lifting motion. Salads and pastas are usually tossed. A fork or tongs may be used.

Football Meatloaf

This meatloaf will score a touchdown when you make it for your family and friends!

Ingredients you will need for one meatloaf that is 6 servings:
  • Watkins Recipe - Football MeatloafWatkins Cooking Spray
  • 1-1/2 pounds/680 g ground beef
  • 1/2 cup/125 mL dry bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup/60 mL milk
  • 1-1/2 to 2 tbsp/22 to 30 mL Watkins Meatloaf Seasoning (amount depends on the spiciness you desire)
  • 1 tbsp/15 mL Watkins Onion Flakes
  • 1 tsp/5 mL Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 egg
  • Sliced pimento, for garnish (or ketchup)
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F/180 C.
  2. Spray the bottom of an 11 x 7-inch/28 x 18-cm baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except pimento; mix well.
  4. Put the beef mixture in the pan and shape into an oval so that it looks like a football. It should be about 8 inches/20 cm long and 4-1/2 inches/12 cm wide at the middle.
  5. Bake, uncovered, for 50 to 55 minutes or until the loaf is no longer pink in the middle. With potholders, remove the pan from the oven.
  6. Carefully lift the meat loaf out of the pan, using 2 large pancake turners or spatulas - ask an adult to help you with this step. Put the meatloaf on a serving platter and arrange the pimento slices on top to look like the lacings of a football. Or, instead of pimento, you can drizzle ketchup to look like lacings.
QuestionWhat is the best way to mix ground beef?
The best way to mix ground beef with other ingredients for hamburgers, meat loaves or meatballs is with your hands, but make sure that you wash them well before and after mixing. Handle the ground beef mixture lightly. Do not over-mix or the beef will be tough and hard when cooked.
