Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.  We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

Spicy Cocoa
The trick to this is to place the marshmallows on the top quickly so they will melt into the hot cocoa. This is a great tummy-warmer!

Ingredients you will need to make 4 servings:
  • Watkins Recipe - Spicy Hot Cocoa1/4 cup/60 ml Watkins Baking Cocoa
  • 1/3 cup/80 ml sugar
  • 1/2 tsp/2.5 ml Watkins Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Watkins Cloves
  • Pinch of Watkins Allspice
  • 1/4 cup/60 ml hot water
  • 3 cups/750 ml milk
  • 1 cup/250 ml miniature marshmallows
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
Instructions:
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and hot water; mix it together until it is all smooth.
  2. Place the saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.  Cook and stir 2 minutes.
  4. Add milk and heat just until it is hot; do not boil.
  5. Pour carefully into cups.
  6. Put marshmallows on top while the cocoa is still very hot so they will melt.
  7. Use your cinnamon stick to stir your cocoa.
QuestionWhat are cinnamon sticks?  Where do they come from?

Cinnamon is actually the bark of an evergreen tree that grows in Asia.  During the rainy season, the bark is stripped from the trees.  When the bark dries, it curls up into tight sticks.  These are great for stirring cocoa or for decorating, but nearly all recipes call for ground cinnamon.  The sticks are hard to grind at home, so Watkins does it for you!  Smile!
