Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.  We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

Macaroni & Cheese

This is much better than macaroni and cheese from a box! For added fun, you can use different shaped pasta or add ingredients like cut-up hot dogs or tuna.

Ingredients you will need to make 6 servings:
  • 1 box (7 ounces/210 grams) uncooked macaroni, about 2 cups/500 ml
  • 2 cups/500 ml hot water
  • 1/3 cup/80 ml butter (or margarine)
  • 1/4 tsp/1 ml Watkins Cheese Flavoured Salt
  • 1/4 tsp/1 ml Watkins Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp/1 ml Watkins Dry Mustard
  • 1/4 tsp/1 ml Watkins Onion Powder
  • 1/3 cup/80 ml all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/4 cups/310 ml milk
  • 8 ounces/225 grams cheddar cheese (or your favourite flavour), cut into small cubes
Instructions:
  1. Combine first 7 ingredients in a 2-quart/litre or larger microwave-safe dish with a cover.
  2. Cover tightly and microwave on HIGH for 5 minutes; tilt the cover slightly if the macaroni begins to bubble over. Carefully remove the cover, stir then cover again and microwave on MEDIUM (or 50% power) for 5 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the flour and milk and stir until it is well mixed. Pour over the macaroni.
  4. Add the cheese and mix well.
  5. Cover tightly and microwave on HIGH for 4 to 5 minutes, carefully removing the cover and stirring every 2 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly and the macaroni is tender.
  6. With potholders, remove from the microwave. Let stand uncovered for 3 minutes; then serve while it is still hot.

Tip!Microwave Oven Safety
Be very careful when removing a lid or other covering. Steam builds up in the container during the cooking process, so always tilt the lid away from you, or remove the covering so steam escapes away from you.

Cinnamon Apples with Vanilla Ice Cream

This hot AND cold dessert is delicious - any time of day!

Ingredients you will need to make 4 servings:
  • 4 tart apples
  • 3 tbsp/45 ml butter (or margarine)
  • 2/3 cup/160 ml brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp/2.5 ml Watkins Vanilla
  • 1-1/2 to 2 tsp/7.5 to 10 ml Watkins Apple Bake Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml evaporated skim milk
  • Vanilla ice cream, ice milk, or frozen yogurt
Instructions:
  1. Wash apples (using Watkins Fresh Wash). Cut into quarters and cut out the apple core. Cut each quarter into 4 slices.
  2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat so it doesn't darken or burn.
  3. Add the apples, sugar, Vanilla and Apple Bake Seasoning. Cook over high heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar begins to thicken (caramelize), about 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in the evaporated skim milk. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens and the apples are tender.
  5. Place scoops of ice cream in 4 dessert dishes.
  6. Spoon hot apples over the ice cream and serve immediately.
Tip!To keep the top of ice cream from drying out once it is opened, smooth a piece of waxed paper directly over the top of the ice cream before closing the lid.  Smile

QuestionWhat is the difference between ice cream, ice milk and frozen yogurt?
  • Ice Cream is made with cream, milk, sweetening and flavouring.  Ice cream contains at least 20% milk fat.
  • Ice Milk is made like ice cream but has milk fat content of 2 to 7%
  • Frozen Yogurt is yogurt with sugar and nonfat milk solids added.  It is similar in fat content to ice milk.
If a recipe calls for ice cream, you can substitute ice milk or frozen yogurt.  This will not affect how the recipe will turn out.
