Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.  We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

Dirt Cups
This fun-to-make-and-eat snack can be made in many different containers.  It can even be put into a clean and never-used flowerpot or sandpail.  These would be lots of fun for a birthday party treat!

Watkins Recipe - Dirt Cups!Ingredients you will need to make 8 Dirt Cups :
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml Watkins Chocolate Dessert Mix
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml sugar
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml  water
  • 2-1/2 cups/725 ml milk
  • 1 package (16 oz/480 g) chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed
  • 1 container (8 oz/250 ml) frozen whipped topping, thawed in refrigerator
  • 8 (7 oz/210 ml) plastic cups (or whatever container you are using)
Instructions:
  1. Measure the Chocolate Dessert Mix, sugar, and water, inot a large microwave-safe bowl; stir it all together well.
  2. Stir in the milk; and mix well.  Place in the microwave and cook on HIGH for 2 minutes, take it out of the microwave and stir it all up.  Put it back into the microwave and cook on HIGH for 3 minutes.  Take it out of the microwave and stir it all up again.  Put it back into the microwave and cook on HIGH for another 3 minutes.  Remove it from the microwave and stir it again.  The pudding should be getting thick; if it's not, then return it to the microwave and cook on HIGH for 2 minutes more.  Remove it from the microwave and stir it once again.  Place a piece of plastic wrap or waxed paper on top of the pudding bowl (don't let it touch the pudding though!) and let it cool until it is no longer warm.
  3. To easily crush the cookies, place them in a zipper-lock plastic bag and seal it up.  Using a rolling pin, roll over the cookies several times until they are crushed.
  4. Divide half of the cookies evenly in the bottom of the 8 plastic cups..
  5. Combine the whipped topping and the cooled pudding and mix them together well.  Fill the cups with the pudding mixture.
  6. Top each cup with the remaining crushed cookies.  Put them into the refrigerator for at least one hour to cool them thoroughly.  Before serving, you can decorate them with gummy worms or frogs, candy flowers, or chopped peanuts.
Tip!If you would like to make grass for on top of the "dirt", place shredded coconut in a small plastic bag.  Add a few drops of green food colouring.  Close the bag up and shake - instant green grass!

Celery Carts

These carts can also be filled with other flavours of Watkins Snack & Dip Mixes - choose your favourite!  You can also try filling them with cheese spread or peanut butter.

Watkins Recipe - Celery CartsIngredients you will need to make 8 carts:
  • 4 large celery stalks
  • 4 oz/125 ml soft-spread cream cheese
  • 1-1/2 tbsp/45 ml Watkins Garden Vegetable Snack & Dip Mix
  • 2 carrots
  • 16 wooden round toothpicks
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the celery with water and then pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel.  Set them aside for now.
  2. Put the cream cheese into a bowl and let it stand at room temperature for a little while until it becomes soft enough to stir easily.
  3. When it is soft, add the Garden Vegetable Dip Mix and stir it all together well.
  4. With a table knife, fill each celery stalk with the cream cheese mixture.  Cut each stalk in half so you have 8 "carts" full.
  5. Peel the carrots and cut them into 32 round slices.  Attach the carrot slices to the toothpicks so they look like wheels.
  6. Place a filled celery stalk on two of these sets of wheels so it now resembles a cart.  Place them on a serving plate.  If you're not eating them all at once, put the extras into the refrigerator for later.
Tip!Older cooks can poke toothpicks into the celery before putting on the carrot wheels.
