Kid Fun!

Everyone loves to eat, but not everyone knows how to cook.
We believe that if you know the basics of cooking and if you know your way around the kitchen, you'll not only become a great cook, but you'll love it, too!  We hope this section is one that you and the young "chefs" in your life find fun and easy to use every month!

Spicy Cocoa
The trick to this is to place the marshmallows on the top quickly so they will melt into the hot cocoa. This is a great tummy-warmer!

Ingredients you will need to make 4 servings:
  • Watkins Recipe - Spicy Hot Cocoa1/4 cup/60 ml Watkins Baking Cocoa
  • 1/3 cup/80 ml sugar
  • 1/2 tsp/2.5 ml Watkins Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Watkins Cloves
  • Pinch of Watkins Allspice
  • 1/4 cup/60 ml hot water
  • 3 cups/750 ml milk
  • 1 cup/250 ml miniature marshmallows
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
Instructions:
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and hot water; mix it together until it is all smooth.
  2. Place the saucepan on the stove-top over medium heat.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly.  Cook and stir 2 minutes.
  4. Add milk and heat just until it is hot; do not boil.
  5. Pour carefully into cups.
  6. Put marshmallows on top while the cocoa is still very hot so they will melt.
  7. Use your cinnamon stick to stir your cocoa.
QuestionWhat are cinnamon sticks?  Where do they come from?

Cinnamon is actually the bark of an evergreen tree that grows in Asia.  During the rainy season, the bark is stripped from the trees.  When the bark dries, it curls up into tight sticks.  These are great for stirring cocoa or for decorating, but nearly all recipes call for ground cinnamon.  The sticks are hard to grind at home, so Watkins does it for you!  Smile!
Merry Reindeer Cookies

Have extra graham crackers and pretzels on hand in case they break where you don't want them to. That's okay ... the mistakes are fun to eat!

Watkins Recipe - Merry Reindeer CookiesIngredients you will need to make 12 reindeers:
  • 1 cup/250 mL powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp/30 mL whipping cream
  • 1 tsp/5 mLWatkins Clear Vanilla
  • 12 graham cracker squares (2-1/2 inches/6.25 cm squares)
  • 24 mini or regular semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 12 small red cinnamon candies (sometimes called Cinnamon Imperials)
  • 12 mini pretzels, broken in half
Instructions:
  1. Make the frosting in a small bowl by combining the powdered sugar, cream, and Clear Vanilla, and mixing until smooth. Set the frosting aside.
  2. Cut one cracker diagonally in half with a serrated knife to form a triangle.
  3. With a metal spatula (or butter knife), spread a small amount of frosting over one cracker half. Top with other cracker half so it still forms a triangle (as in the picture above). Spread a small amount of frosting over the top cracker.
  4. Place on of the cinnamon candies on the narrow peak of the triangle to make the nose. Add 2 of the pretzel halves to the larger side of the triangle to form antlers. Place 2 chocolate chips on the reindeer's face to form the eyes.
  5. Repeat this procedure with remaining ingredients. Let dry on a wire rack before eating.
