Sprinkles for decorations
Instructions:
- Mix the first SIX ingredients together.
- Stir in the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt to make a dough.
- Shape the dough into 1-1/4 in/3 cm balls and place them about 2 inches/5 cm apart on ungreased cookie sheets, then flatten them so they become 2-1/2 inch/6.5 cm circles using the bottom of a glass that has been greased so the dough does not stick.
- If you plan to hang your cookies on the tree, make a hole in each one about 1/4 inch/6 mm from the top, using the end of a plastic straw.
- Bake the cookies at 400F/200C for 8 to 10 minutes until the edges are lightly browned; then set them aside to cool completely.
While the cookies are cooling,
you can make your frosting
- In a large mixing bowl, on low speed, beat together the powdered sugar, cream of tartar, vanilla and egg whites until they are just mixed.
- Then increase the speed to high and beat it until the mixture becomes very stiff.
- Cover the bowl of frosting to keep it from drying out.
When your
cookies are cooled completely, it's time to decorate! - Separate some frosting and add the red food
colour to use for Santa's hat; keep some frosting white to use for his beard; and some for other colours that you have chosen to use..
- Spread the frosting lightly over the top
surface of the cookies in the place for his hat and beard, then make "Santa Faces" by pressing chocolate chips or raisins into the moist frosting. Get creative and have fun making lots of different faces!
- When you have finished decorating, set the
cookies aside to let the frosting dry for about one hour until it is firm.
- Thread brightly coloured ribbon (or fishing line) through the hole for hanging as an ornament.
- Store your cookies in a tightly covered container.
