• When J.R. Watkins started selling his liniments and remedies door-to-door back in 1868, he wanted to impress upon his clients just how far he went to ensure that the ingredients in his remedies were well beyond the quality and purity of his competitors.  He prepared a tray of samples of all the herbs he used in his preparations along with information on where the herb was attained and it's beneficial properties. Even then, J.R. used only the best from all around the world!  He proudly displayed it to all of his customers and to his surprise, they wanted to purchase the herbs and spices themselves!
• A manufacturer of spices and herbs can legally add "filler" to the bottle as long as it comes from the same plant, tree or bush and the "spice" - these fillers could include things like husks, skins, or even bark.  Watkins uses NO FILLERS whatsoever in any of our Gourmet Spices, Herbs and Seasoning Blends.
• Did you know that when you purchase a pepper blend, there is a good chance that it contains salt to enhance the flavour?  Well, again, Watkins looks at that as "filler" and you can rest assured that our Gourmet Peppers and Pepper Blends contain no salt.
• Watkins Famous Granulated Black Pepper lives up to its name!  When the peppercorns are received at Watkins processing plant, they are carefully screens and all of the stems, husks and leaves (the fillers) are removed.  They are then put through a series of mills that crack the peppercorns smaller and smaller until they are all uniform granules.  Our peppercorns are never put through 'rollers' like some other brands because when that happens the peppercorn gets crushed - right along with the essential oil molecules that give pepper its flavour.  In each little Watkins Pepper granule, all of the essential oil molecules are preserved, giving Watkins its famous "burst" of pepper flavour when added to food ... this also is what makes Watkins the only guaranteed "sneeze-proof" pepper available!
