It's March - the season of Spring - the season of fresh new beginnings - the season of sunlight and longer days ... and spring cleaning!!

This time-honoured tradition is one that we all tend to look forward to with mixed emotions - it feels so good to get deep into those closets and cupboards and clean out all the dust and unused articles that have accumulated over the winter; getting all the dust bunnies out from under furniture and all the webs down from the rafters leaves our home feeling "lighter" somehow and much, much brighter .... but oh the work that goes into achieving that final wonderful result!!!

Watkins to the rescue!  We've got the products, the tips and the ideas to make this year's journey into spring your simplest - and healthiest - ever!

Did you know that indoor pollution can be much higher than outdoor - simply due to the harsh chemicals in many of the home care products we use?  This has been proven to lead to higher cancer rates among those who use these types of products - namely housewives and home-care professionals!  As well as in small children who crawl the floors, chew on the railings and explore their world through their mouth.

Read on - and we will show you how "Watkinizing" your home will result in a healthier total environment - and be LESS WORK for YOU to achieve those "picture perfect" results!

Spring Cleaning Tips
to help make spring cleaning easier and more efficient:

Don't backtrack.  Start in one corner and go all the way around.  Go left to right, and top to bottom (always top to bottom, since dirt falls!).  That way, you establish a system and don't waste time.

Carry most of your cleaning needs with you.  Keep kitchen cleaners handy in the kitchen, and bathroom cleaners in the bathroom closet if you have one.  Use a plastic box or handled tray to carry multi-purpose cleaners with you from room to room.  Fill sprayer bottles with dilutions of Organic Cleaner (for general cleaning) and Degreaser (for greasy dirt), and carry Window and Glass Cleaner and Citrus All-Purpose Cleaner, along with rags.  If you're doing floors, carry a bucket with Pine Oil Disinfectant in water and a sponge.  Speaking of floors .....

Mop on your hands and knees.  It doesn't sound like fun, but it's actually faster, and you pick up more dirt.  Buy a good kneel pad, such as for gardening, or wear knee pads.  (If you forget these, you may need to take Watkins Linimax!).  Hint:  If you have no-wax floors, clean them with Watkins Window and Glass Cleaner and a damp rag.  This will create a brilliant shine.  Every other time, when you want to disinfect, use Pine Oil Disinfectant.

After cleaning - freshen each room with the Watkins Air Enhancer or Room Freshener of your choice to add the finishing touch to your beautiful home!

Reward yourself afterward!  Treat yourself to a calming or energizing bath with Watkins Bath Spice Salts (don't forget the appropriate Candle to complete the ambience!)  Revive your tired feet with Rejuvenating Peppermint Foot Cream, and soothe those hard-working muscles with and application of Watkins Liniment.

I believe the way that "Spring Cleaning" started was that with the return of the sun shining into the windows after a long, cold winter, people looked around as said, "Oh my, look at all the dust in here!"

2 packages rapid-rising active dry yeast
1 tbsp. / 15 ml Watkins Cinnamon
3/4 cup / 180 ml milk
1 tsp. / 5 ml Watkins Vanilla Extract
1 tsp. / 5 ml Watkins Butter Flavour
1/2 cup / 125 ml Watkins Original Grapeseed Oil
1/3 cup / 80 ml white sugar
3/4 tsp. / 4 ml Watkins Sea Salt
3 eggs
2/3 cup / 160 ml dried currants

Icing
1 egg white
1-1/4 cups / 325 ml powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. / 1.2 ml Watkins White Vanilla Flavour or Almond Extract

Watkins Cooking Spray

In large bowl, combine 2 cups / 500 ml flour, yeast and Cinnamon. Heat milk and next 5 ingredients until just warm (about 120º - 130ºF / 50º - 55ºC). Add to dry mixture along with eggs. Beat at low speed of electric mixer for 1/2 minute, scraping bowl. Beat 3 minutes at high speed. Stir in currants by hand and add enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Shape into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once.

Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch down and turn out onto floured surface; cover and let rest 10 minutes. Divide into 18 pieces; form into smooth balls. Spray baking sheet with Watkins Cooking Spray and place the 18 balls on the baking sheet 1-1/2 inches / 4 cm apart.

Cover and let rise until double, 30 to 45 minutes. Cut a shallow cross in each; brush tops with slightly beaten egg white. Bake at 375ºF / 190ºC for 12 to 15 minutes. Cool slightly and pipe on cross with a combination of the powdered sugar, White Vanilla, and enough milk to make a thick icing. Makes 18

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

A recent study of 13,000 healthy subjects found that lack of iron may lead to hair loss in women. Researchers found that 48% of non-menopausal women suffered from iron deficiency, and women with severe hair loss had much lower iron levels than those who did not suffer from hair loss. Iron deficiency can also lead to fatigue, lethargy, and behavior and cognitive problems. Researchers reluctantly concluded that hair loss in men is predominantly genetic and there is no relation to iron and hair loss in men. Iron supplements are not recommended for men as iron overload in men has been linked to increased risk of chronic disease. Hormonal imbalance and other mineral deficiencies may also cause temporary but reversible hair loss. Watkins Female Formula provides iron and other vitamins, minerals and isoflavones for female health and hormonal balance, and Watkins iron-free Male Formula with vitamin E, lycopene and saw palmetto promote male health and performance. Watkins SHN Formula may promote hair growth in those who are vitamin and mineral deficient.
