What the heck is a "Yankee Doodle"??? ... Today, Yankee Doodle is looked upon as a nursery rhyme, but in the 18th century, it was a full-fledged national expression of patriotism of many stanzas, played mostly by military bands! It didn't start out quite that flamboyantly though - Yankee Doodle originated in Britain as a derisive slur to the "colonists" across the pond. It's known that the British Redcoats prided themselves on being "dapperly" and uniformly attired. On the other hand, Colonial soldiers were by comparison, a ragamuffin bunch, each wearing whatever clothes he owned, and having no true uniforms. The earliest versions of Yankee Doodle mocks the American's "shabby" appearance - especially with the term "macaroni". In old England, a "macaroni" was one who believed he was stylishly attired when by the vogue of the day, his outfit was actually outlandish. Thus, the Yankee Doodle character, by sticking a feather in his cap, believes he has become fashionable when in fact his appearance is comical. In singing the song, the British poked fun at what they viewed as New England's country bumpkins.
