January 2006

Happy New Year!

We hope that you and your family are having a very happy new year so far!
At this time of year, with all of the "year in review" specials on television, and all of the memories we shared with family and friends over the holidays, it's very hard not to look back at 2005 and take stock of how our life changed over the year.  We sincerely hope that your year ended on a high note for you and everyone you care about.

Along with looking back comes looking forward and making some decisions that would move you and your family forward in 2006.  Some people like to make New Year's Resolutions ... and some people are even able to stick to them!  Smile!
We heard a quote from country singer Tim McGraw that we thought was worth repeating.  "It's the little decisions that we make a thousand times a day that form who we are and the direction we will take."  We think that this philosophy works better and is a lot easier to monitor!  You can make small or large changes and really monitor the outcome - and if the result does not lead you in the direction you want to go, you can quickly change what you're doing, then check again ... and again ... and again!

Watkins also believes in that philosophy - and we have many new and exciting changes to share with you this month that we believe will make YOUR Watkins association even more inviting!  We hope you agree ....

ChefFast Food Facts!
Did you "Resolve" to make 2006 the year you start eating healthier and staying in better shape?
Here are some ideas to help you develop new 'habits' to make sure your goals are met ....

  • Apples - are a super 'diet' food!  Whole apples will keep your blood glucose levels up for a while and make you feel fuller than do equivalent carbohydrate calories from apple juice or apple sauce!  Bonus - Whole fresh apples may also help to ward off cancer because they contain caffeic or chlorogenic acid which has been shown to block cancer formations!
  • Cocktails, Anyone? - New Year's celebrations may be over, but don't put away your bottle of wine or beer too quickly!  More and more studies are showing that "light" drinkers (one to two drinks per day) have less heart disease than teetotalers and, of course, alcoholics. In most studies, one drink is equal to a half-pint of beer or cider, or one 4 oz. glass of wine.
  • Say Bye to High Cholesterol - Everyone needs to work at keeping their cholesterol levels down, and a good start would be to include apples, bananas, carrots, cold-water fish, dried beans, garlic, grapefruit and olive oil in your diet.  You will also want to be sure to get plenty of fiber and great sources of this are whole grains, barley, brown rice and especially oats.  A bonus to including these foods is also that you will find yourself feeling 'fuller' for longer so you will actually be eating less!
  • Your Mind Says "Let's Go", but your Knees Say "NOOOO!!!"- Although there are many different causes and treatments for arthritic pain, here are some foods that are common to all in reducing the symptoms - to help reduce pain and swelling eat foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, sardines, lake trout, and mackerel.  To help repair and rebuild bone, cartilage and connective tissue, you will want to include more sulfur-containing foods such as asparagus, eggs, garlic and onions. Many people with arthritis have higher levels of copper and iron in their bodies - to counteract this you will want to add the amino acid 'histidine' to your diet.  This can be found in rice, wheat and rye.  Pineapple is also important because it contains bromelain, an enzyme that is excellent for reducing inflammation - for best results, be sure that your pineapple is fresh, not canned or frozen.
  • 6 a Day, Keeps the Gout at Bay! - what is this wondrous food, you ask? ... Cherries!  Although there is no proven scientific reason for this.  Since Dr. Ludwig Blau published his study in 1950, many have tried this and achieved wonderful results, so much so that "Prevention" Magazine printed this advice and received letters from dozens who tried it and found it worked! ... and what medicine tastes better than a fresh, juicy black cherry, eh?
  • Happy Birthday to You! ... did you know that if you sing the entire verse of this catchy tune while washing your hands - or brushing your teeth - you will have done this activity for the time recommended by health-care specialists to achieve the maximum benefits?

Tip!It looks like it's true - our mothers and grandmothers certainly knew what they were doing when they listened to their Watkins Associate!

What???Did You Know ...
We've all heard of some 'whacky' inventions in our time.
Here are a few that you may have missed!

  • 'Musical' Floor Polisher patented in April, 1915 by Lili Aline McGrath - This 'boon' to the homemaker consists of a pair of over-slippers that are made of a material suitable for polishing the floor in question, and tied together with a cord long enough so that a full stride can be taken.  Once on her feet, the homemaker would simply turn on some music or belt out a tune and dance her dirty floors away!  The inventor recommended dance moves that included long glides - it sounds like this one beat Richard Simmons in the dancercize market!
  • The Air Conditioned Grave - patented in August 1904 by E.S. Crosby and E.R. Henry - at the time of this invention, people had a morbid fear of being buried alive (which says a lot for the medical professionals of the day!).  Although many inventions came out so the mistakenly buried person could signal those above that he/she was alive and "kicking", this one offers an electric switch that is placed in the hand of the "deceased" person before the casket is closed.  If the slightest pressure is applied to the switch, and electric bell sounds and a supply of oxygen is switched on until help arrives!
  • Alarm Fork - patented in June of 1995 by Nicole M. Dubus and Susan Springfield - your mother always told you to chew your food better, well this fork will ensure the proper timing of bites!  When you grab a mouthful a red light flashes on the handle for a preset amount of time.  When the green light flashes, you can dig in again!  This is one way to make sure you avoid "fast" food! ... I know, I can hear your 'groan' now!!  Smile

We hope you enjoyed these 'unique' inventions as much as we did - they say the mind works in mysterious ways, and now we've found the proof!

Cha-Ching!

We've told you over and over that Watkins offers almost 400 products that not only enhance your life - with delicious flavours, pampering lotions and potions, and home care products that are as good for the environment as they are at cleaning your home, but we don't very often talk about the prices you pay ... until now.

  • AccountantYour Watkins "grocery" store adjusts its prices only twice a year - once in January and once in July/August.  Once the price is set, that's what you pay for the next 6 months - unless of course the item goes on special and you pay less.  Does your regular grocery store offer you that kind of service?
  • This January, we are VERY pleased to tell you that of our almost 400 high-quality products, 12 of them actually went DOWN in price - and only 8 had a slight price increase!  That means that approximately 380 products had no price change whatsoever over the last 6 month period - and when you combine the last 6 months with the coming 6 months, that means that you will be paying the same price for about 380 of our products for a full year!  Does that happen very often in your regular grocery store?
  • When you combine this information with the new reduced shipping rates Watkins is now offering ... why would anyone shop anywhere else???
Again we say ... Cha-Ching!  Smile

Facts, Tips & Ideas to Save You Money!

It's TRUE!  Ounce for ounce, Watkins saves you money! Since 1868, J. R. Watkins' mission was to bring the highest quality products and ingredients to his valued customers at the lowest price possible without compromising the integrity of the quality - and that mission stands true to this day. After all, we're not good because we're old ... we're old because we're good! Smile

  • Watkins Black Pepper is the reason they call pepper the "King" of spices!  There's a reason why Watkins won a gold medal for this product - top quality Malabar and Lampong peppercorns are 'granulated' (never crushed) through our exclusive process that preserves their high essential oil content.  It's true - once you've tried Watkins pepper, you'll never go back!
  • Watkins Grapeseed Oil - is lower in saturated fat and higher in unsaturated fat than nearly every other oil available!  It's also rich in antioxidants and is one of the few foods shown to both lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol)!  The other 'bonus' is that grapeseed oil does not start to smoke nearly as quickly as regular oils - which preserves it's benefits even longer.
  • Watkins Odor Zap is a natural odor eliminator - it doesn't just 'mask' the odor like many other brands do, this product contains live enzymes that actually eat up the odor causing bacteria!  And because it has no scent of its own, it's perfectly safe for use in any room of the house, and even for those with scent allergies and/or sensitivities!
  • Watkins Creme Cleanser is one of those products that you say "Where have you been all my life??" the first time you try it!  It's safe for use on porcelain, stainless steel, ceramic stove tops, tiles - pretty much anywhere!  It's non-abrasive formula cleans quickly and rinses away easily and completely!
  • Watkins Bio-Drain Opener is the safest drain opener we know of - and the most effective, too!  In fact, it's so safe that it doesn't require a child-proof cap!  Perfect for homes with small children or curious pets.
  • Watkins Red Liniment - our very first product! - has been relieving aches and pains since 1868! It contains the 'newest' trend in pain relieve - capscium, or red pepper extract! How trendy is that?  Apply it directly to aching muscles, arthritic or stiff joints, migraine headaches, or even headaches caused by hangovers (where was your bottle on New Year's Day?!)  This 'watery' liniment works best when you apply it to your skin and let it soak in by itself instead of rubbing.  You'll feel the difference in pain relief!
  • Watkins Pet Odor Eliminator for Pet Problems is perfect for those little messes that can occur from time to time - and it's also great at keeping them from coming back, too!  Cats especially, like to mark territory by using the same 'familiar' spot over and over.  Getting rid of the scent can stop the cat from coming back!  Smile!

When you choose to shop in our Watkins Store, you not only choose unique and high quality products to 'pamper' yourself and your family with - you are also making a conscious money-saving choice that will move your family ahead in many other ways.

After all, a penny - or dollar - saved
is one that is still in YOUR pocket!
(and better than one earned because you pay no income tax on it!)

Watkins Recipe - Dirt Cups

Dirt Cups

This fun-to-make-and-eat snack can be made in many different containers.  It can even be put into a clean and never-used flowerpot or sandpail!  Smile!

Utensils You Will Need

  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • Dry and liquid measuring cups
  • Wooden mixing spoon
  • Rolling pin
  • 8 plastic cups
  • Green food colouring

Ingredients You Will Need to Make 8 Cups

  • 1/2 cup/125 ml Watkins Chocolate Dessert Mix
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml white sugar
  • 1/2 cup/125 ml water
  • 2-1/2 cups/750 ml milk
  • 1 package (450 g/16 oz)chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed
  • 1 container (250 ml/8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed in the refrigerator
  • 8 (784 ml/7 oz) plastic cups or other small containers

How To Make It

  1. Measure the Chocolate Dessert Mix, sugar, and water, into a large microwave-safe bowl; stir well.
  2. Stir in milk; mix well.  Place in microwave and cook on HIGH for 2 minutes, take out of microwave and stir.  Put it back in the microwave and cook on HIGH for 3 minutes.  Take out of microwave and stir again.  Put back into microwave and cook on HIGH for another 3 minutes.  Remove from the microwave and stir again.  Pudding should begin getting thick; if not, return to microwave and cook on HIGH for 2 minutes more.  Remove from microwave and stir once again.  Place a piece of plastic wrap or waxed paper on top of pudding in bowl and let it cool until it is no longer warm.
  3. To easily cruch cookies, place in a zipper-lock plastic bag and close tightly.  Using a rolling pin, roll over cookies to crush.
  4. Divide half of the cookies in the bottom of 8 plastic cups.
  5. Combine whipped topping and the cooled pudding; mix well.  Fill cups with pudding mixture.
  6. Top with remaining crushed cookies.  Put in the refrigerator for at least one hour.  Before serving, decorate with gummy worms or frogs, candy flowers, or chopped peanuts.
Check!  To make grass for on top of the dirt, place shredded coconut in a small plastic bag.  Add a few drops of green food colouring.  Close the bag and shake well.
