Merry Reindeer Cookies
Be sure to have extra graham crackers and pretzels on hand in case they break where you don't want them to. That's okay - the mistakes are fun to eat!

Smile! Watkins Recipe - Merry Reindeer Cookies

Utensils You Will Need

  • Small Bowl
  • Dry Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Small Metal Mixing Spoon (or Teaspoon)
  • Serrated Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Table Knife
  • Wire Cooling Rack

Ingredients You Will Need to Make 12 Cookies

  • 1 cup/250 ml powdered (icing) sugar
  • 2 tbsp/30 ml whipping cream
  • 1 tsp/5 ml Watkins Clear Vanilla Extract
  • 12 graham cracker squares (2-1/2 inches/24 cm)
  • 24 mini or regular semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 12 small red cinnamon candies (sometimes called Cinnamon Imperials)
  • 12 mini pretzels, broken in half

How To Make It

  1. In a small bowl, combine powdered sugar, cream, and white vanilla flavour; mix until smooth. Set frosting aside.
  2. Cut one cracker diagonally in half with a serrated knife to form a triangle.
  3. With metal mixing spoon, spread a small amount of frosting over one cracker half. Top with the other cracker half so it still forms a triangle. Spread a small amount of frosting on top cracker.
  4. Place one of the cinnamon candies on narrow peak for nose. Add 2 of the pretzel halves to larger side for antlers. Place chocolate chips on reindeer for eyes. It should look like the picture above.
  5. Repeat this procedure with remaining ingredients. Let dry on wire rack.

Monthly Customer Newsletter with Tips & Recipes

December 2005

Here we are at the end of 2005 ... already! It just seems like yesterday that we were saying Happy New Year and now we will soon be saying it again! We hope that this year brought you and your family all of the joy and happiness that you desired - and more.

Snow CoupleAs we close out the year, we can't help but think back on all of the wonderful people that we were fortunate enough to spend time with - either in person or through e-mails. We have gotten to know many new friends and acquaintances over the past few months - friendships that we hope will last long into the future - and we are honoured to count you among our friends that we look forward to spending time with in 2006.

For many generations, the "Watkins Man" was counted among the friends of many a North American family, and we hope that we have been able to carry on that wonderful tradition. Maybe we don't show up at your door at breakfast time like in the good old days Wink!, but we do our best to always be here to serve you in the way that best suits you. We hope we have lived up to the standard that J.R. Watkins set for himself and his Associates way back in 1868.

Thank You!It is with our very best wishes and heartfelt thanks that we wish you and your family the merriest of Holiday Seasons and a very prosperous and healthy New Year.

ChefFast Food Facts!

This month we travel back in time for some "timeless" food tips! All of these tips come from the Watkins "Household Hints" Book that was published in 1941 ....
  • Avocado - The avocado has four times as much food value as other fruits except the banana! It has 2% protein, 1% sugar, no starch and is recommended for special diets of diabetics. It also contain vitamins A to G with the exception of C.
  • "Protective" Foods - For vigorous health, include in the daily diet, milk, eggs, butter, whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and tomatoes. These are rich in vitamins and minerals, calcium, and in Vitamins A and C. Serve vegetables twice a day, one green and one yellow. Include a serving of raw fruit and a raw crisp vegetable as carrots or green cabbage and tomatoes. The right food, properly cooked, builds and repairs the body, gives energy for work and play, resistance to disease, and is the basis for good health.
  • Dried Fruits - Although dried fruits lack Vitamin C, so valuable in fresh fruit, dried fruits are rich in iron and certain vitamins and are more economical, especially during the winter months. Serve dried apricots, peaches, prunes, pears, dates and figs. Serve apricots with pork chops, peaches with lamb, apples with pork roast, and dates, apricots or peaches with ham.
  • Vegetables - Important in the Diet - Leafy, green and yellow coloured vegetables and tomatoes are the most highly valued for vitamins and minerals. In low cost diets, particularly, it is important to include vegetables rich in iron such as dried beans, dried peas, vegetable greens, lentils and canned or fresh tomatoes.
Vegetables contain protein and carbohydrates in the form of starch, sugar and cellulose. In cooking, it is important to preserve the mineral salts and vitamins, and increase the palatability of vegetables. Do not peel and soak. Wash vegetables thoroughly. Scrape those with thin skin and peel the thick skinned variety very thin, to save the minerals lying directly underneath. Bake vegetables in the skin to retain 90% of the vitamins and minerals. If boiled, use a small amount of boiling water. Cook only until tender. Do not overcook vegetables. Never use soda in cooking green vegetables as it destroys the vitamin content essential to health.
Tip!It looks like it's true - our mothers and grandmothers certainly knew what they were doing when they listened to their Watkins Associate!

Christmas MouseDid You Know ...

  • That "Xmas", the familiar abbreviation for Christmas, originated with the Greeks? X is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Xristos. By the sixteenth century, "Xmas" was popular throughout Europe. Whereas early Christians had understood that the term merely was Greek for "Christ's mass", later Christians, unfamiliar with the Greek reference, mistook the X as a sign of disrespect, an attempt by heathen to rid Christmas of its central meaning. For several hundred years, Christians disapproved of the use of the term - and today, some still do.
  • The Poinsettia's adoption as the Christmas flower dates back to 1828. Native to Mexico, the plant, a member of the spurge family, has small yellow flowers surrounded high up by large, tapering red leaves, which resemble petals and are often mistaken for them. At least as early as the 18th century, Mexicans called the plant "the flower of the blessed night", because of its resemblance to the Star of Bethlehem. In 1828, Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first US ambassador to Mexico, brought the plant into the States, where it was renamed in his honour. By the time of his death in 1851, the poinsettia's flaming red colour had already established its Christmas association.

Facts, Tips & Ideas to Save You Money!

It's TRUE!  Ounce for ounce, Watkins saves you money! Since 1868, J. R. Watkins' mission was to bring the highest quality products and ingredients to his valued customers at the lowest price possible without compromising the integrity of the quality - and that mission stands true to this day. After all, we're not good because we're old ... we're old because we're good! Smile

  • Watkins Mouthwash Concentrate is just that - VERY CONCENTRATED!! One little 1 oz/30 ml bottle will make 4 to 6 quarts/litres!! That's awesome in itself, however .... have you ever purchased a mouthwash that was too strong? You had to water it down, right? What if you purchased one that was not strong enough? You were stuck with it, right?! When you choose Watkins - you also choose the strength you make - every time! This is also a perfect "family" choice because it contains no alcohol so it is safe for children as well as elderly people who sometimes suffer from a dry mouth and don't need to dry it out any further by rinsing with alcohol!
  • Watkins Aloe Burn Cream - is perfect for every household. Just a little dab will relieve the burn and pain thanks to the combination of pure aloe along with lidocaine. It's great to keep by the fireplace or woodstove, the kitchen stove, the ironing board ... you get the picture! And when the kids get wrestling around on the carpet, it also soothes the sting of carpet burn!
  • Watkins Chai Tea is guaranteed to be just about the BEST tasting Chai you've ever had! It's a blend of black and green teas so the caffeine level is lower than most Chai's you will find elsewhere - and the flavour is such that if you do go back to your "other" brand after trying Watkins, you will come back really quickly! Wink! Watkins Chai Tea along with a handy Infuser make a wonderful gift idea. Add it to a basket with a large mug, a good novel and a warm, snuggly lap blanket! (see this month's specials for savings!)
  • Watkins Liquid Spices are definitely not only a 'money-saver', but a flavour booster! Only the pure extract of garlic, ginger, onion and chipotle are used and infused into a grapeseed oil base. And talk about concentration - one teaspoon/5 ml of our Garlic Liquid Spice is equal to EIGHT cloves of garlic!! Do you know someone who loves garlic bread? Team up a bottle of Watkins Liquid Garlic Spice in a rustic basket with a loaf of Watkins Good Tastings Bread Mix and a bottle of wine!
  • Watkins Meat Magic is perfect for anyone you know who like the more 'exotic' or 'game' meats. It not only brings out the natural flavours, but it also helps to retain more of the natural juices as well so the meat will be tenderer. This would make a wonderful gift when teamed up with a selection of Watkins Gourmet Peppers and Pepper Blends! ... and speaking of ...
  • Watkins Gourmet Peppers and Pepper Blends - did you know that many 'pepper' blends you find on store shelves contain salt??? It's true! At Watkins, we don't need to 'enhance' the flavour of our peppers - they are superb all by themselves!!
  • Watkins White Cream Liniment has been relieving aches and pains since 1915! Now that's 'time-tested', wouldn't you agree? Do you know someone who suffers from arthritis, rheumatism - or the general aches and pains of aging or over-exertion? I think when you put it that way, we all know LOTS of people like that (maybe even ourselves!). Team this old-time favourite with a cozy blanket and a hot water bottle - it's perfect for those who are in nursing homes, too!
  • Watkins Old-Fashioned Finished Wood Cleaner & Restorer is wonderful at protecting and restoring your most treasured wood furniture and accessories. A customer once told us that she had been using it on her grandmother's antique buffet and was very happy with the results. She then got a cleaning lady who liked to bring along her own products. Within a few weeks of the supermarket brand being used on it, our customer began to notice fine lines and dryness showing up on her treasured buffet. She got the cleaning lady to use Watkins on it - and sure enough, it didn't take long for the lines to disappear the original lustre to come back to the piece.... yes, her cleaning lady now carries Watkins home-care products along with her! Smile!

When you choose to shop in our Watkins Store, you not only choose unique and high quality products to 'pamper' yourself and your family with - you are also making a conscious money-saving choice that will move your family ahead in many other ways.

After all, a penny - or dollar - saved is one that is still in YOUR pocket!
