Gift-Giving Tips to Please Friends, Family  ... AND Your Budget!

Santa's ListIt's nice to be generous, but foolhardy to go overboard with holiday gift giving.  To help keep spending in line:

  • Prepare a holiday budget.  Decide ahead of time how much you can afford.  Consider the cost of extra food, entertainment, and decorations that always come with the holidays.  Have a gift in mind before you head for the stores.  That way you'll be less likely to buy on impulse.
  • Beware of "buy now, pay later" offers.  If a store says it will skip billing you for purchases until March or April (or longer!), ask whether interest charges will accrue during that time.  If it will cost you extra to put off paying, it's no bargain.
  • Give freebies - gifts that cost little or nothing.  Be innovative:  Offer a day of errands for an elderly friend or relative.  Bake for a busy neighbour.  Encourage your children to give their time to others.  Give your skilled services, such as consulting, sewing, or gardening, for free.  Often these gifts are appreciated more than anything you could buy at a store.
  • ... and always remember to think "Watkins"!  Watkins household and personal care "staples" make wonderful and unique gifts for your loved ones and you will ultimately help them save money on their grocery budget at the same time!  A selection of our gourmet spices and seasoning blends presented in a pretty mixing bowl or with a new set of kitchen tools, snack and dip mixes presented in a dip bowl with a package of their favourite crackers or chips, soup and gravy bases all wrapped up in a set of crockery bowls, or our famous and "luxurious" vanilla or aloe and green tea personal care wrapped up in a cozy terry bath robe, not only look great under the tree, but are a delight for many months to come!

Did You Know ...

Question Mark

What was the first stuff to be "cut and dried"? ... Herbs!  Physicians in the sixteenth century were likely to prescribe herbs as treatment for most maladies.  Although they also were used as cooking ingredients, much faith was put in herbs as "modern" remedies.  Physicians preferred dispensing herbs that were already cut and dried, because dry herbs are both more concentrated and more uniform in strength.  While one batch of fresh thyme might vary in potency from another, dried thyme made the dosage routine, which, come to think of it, is pretty much our definition of cut and dried today!

Question MarkWhy is a Speech Delivered Before Drinking Called a Toast? ... In the seventeenth century, long before wine coolers or Harvey Wallbangers, revelers put pieces of spiced, toasted bread in wine (or, less frequently, in ale or sherry).  Soon it became de rigueur to drain a glassful when someone was saluted.  One who drank all the wine thus consumed the toast as well.  Neil Ewart reports an almost certainly apocryphal anecdote to explain the origin of toast;  A gentleman eyed a beautiful woman at the public baths.  Inspired, he dipped a glass into the water, held it up to public view, and drank to her health.  "Whereupon a reveler, who had been enjoying more real liquor than the natural mineral water, jumped into the bath and declared that he would have nothing to do with the liquor but would have the toast ... in other words, the lady herself!"

Tip! Tips, Tricks and Ideas!

When making rolled cookies or crackers, roll and cut out your dough directly on the baking sheet.  This will save you time and clean-up!

Grind up puffed rice and use it instead of sugar to sprinkle on cookies or pastries.

For a flaky piecrust, use sour cream or yogurt for the liquid.

If you accidentally add too much liquid to a pie dough, don't try to work in more flour or the crust will toughen.  Instead, sandwich the dough between two sheets of waxed paper, flatten it to a thickness of about 1 inch/2.5 cm, and place it in the freezer until firm.  Then you will be able to roll it out easily.

When measuring oil and honey for a recipe, measure the oil first so that it coats the spoon or cup, making the honey that's measured next slide out easily.

The serrated, slightly curved grapefruit knife does more than just separate grapefruit segments; it is ideal for lifting baked goods and cakes that don't want to leave their pans!
