Make Your Own
Dog Cookies!

What You Need

  • 1/2 cup Cornmeal
  • 6 tablespoons Oil
  • 2/3 cup Watkins Beef or Chicken Soup (prepared) or water
  • 2 cup Whole wheat flour
  • Rolling pin or drinking glass with straight sides
  • Cookie cutters (bone shaped would be fun)
  • Cookie sheet
  • Use of an oven

How To Make It

  1. Mix dry ingredients together, add wet ingredients.
  2. Use your hands to mush it up well. If it feels too dry, add a few drops of water. If it feels too wet, add a teaspoon of flour at a time until it feels soft but not sticky. Careful not to over-mush or the dough will get tough.
  3. Roll out about 1/4" thick on a flour dusted surface, cut out with any shape of cookie cutters. Place on cookie sheet.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F, about 30-35 minutes, or until lightly golden. Be sure to let cool before giving to your pet!

Why should you make the choice for "green" home care products?

  • Studies have shown that over long - and short - periods of time, harsh "industrial" chemicals can do great harm to people - even the unborn!  A recent study actually showed that a chemical similar to rocket fuel has shown up in breast milk!  Women who work in the home rather than going out to a traditional "job" stand a much higher risk of developing many kinds of cancer - why?  It's thought that they spend more time using, smelling and absorbing chemicals than women who work outside the home, and don't have the time or energy to make their home "spotless".
  • We all remember the fight to get lead out of household paints because of the children who were ingesting it by chewing on painted items like crib rails, etc.  Today no one doubts the seriousness of that study, but we still continue to use so many other dangerous substances!   For example, ammonia, chlorine, toluene, benzene, etc. without giving it a second thought!
  • Are you ready to put your family's health at risk by using chemicals that may lead to long term damage like cancer or even death?  Watkins home care and laundry products are designed not only with the environment in mind, but with YOUR HEALTH in mind!  Learn more about how your home can become totally "green"!

Did You Know ...

Question Mark

How did the April Fool's Day tradition get started?  ... The most convincing historical evidence suggests that April Fooling originated in France under King Charles IX.

In the early 16th century in France, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 with the advent of Spring.  The celebrations ran for a full week and included exchanging gifts, dinners and parties, concluding on April 1.

In 1564 when our current "Gregorian" calendar was adopted, King Charles proclaimed that New Year's Day celebrations be moved back to January 1.  As could be expected, many people resisted the change - or quite simply forgot about it - and continued to party and exchange gifts as usual from March 25 to April 1.  These people were ridiculed by others by sending foolish gifts and invitations to non-existent parties.

Years later, when the country was comfortable and accustomed to New Year's Day on January 1, the April Fool's practical joking was fondly remembered and grew into a tradition in it's own right.  It took almost 200 years for the custom to reach England and then onto North America.

Gardening Tips ... it's almost time!!!

It's time to get those seedlings started, and here are a few tips and ideas for you:

  • Be sure to water your seedlings with water that is at room temperature rather than directly from the tap - and don't forget that it is not a good idea to use softened water.
  • Soak your seeds in warm water for 24 to 48 hours before planting to soften the seed husk - try using a wide-mouthed thermos bottle with warm water.
  • Beans will not sprout unless room temperature is 68 F/20 C or higher.  You can warm the room enough by placing your sprouting jar or tray near a 75-watt light bulb.
  • If your beet seeds are a little temperamental in their germination, try spreading the seeds on a piece of waxed paper and rolling them with a rolling pin to crush the outside husks and giving the seeds a head start.
  • To ensure that the seeds are not buried too deeply by covering them with a trowel or even your hand, brush the soil over the top with a soft paint brush.
  • Looking for seedling pots?  Save your orange skins!  Cut your oranges in half to eat and then scoop out the fruit, saving the skin as a mini-planter.  You can then put the entire "pot" into the ground and the skin will simply nourish the roots as the plant grows!
  • Thinking of transplanting a tree or shrub?  Transplanting is like surgery, you are severing the roots of the plant.  Therefore the plant must be sleeping, or what is commonly known as in a dormant state.
If your plant is still dormant and has no new growth on it, then you can safely transplant it.  But if your plant is awake, and has lots of new growth, don't move it now.
If the plant has swollen buds that are ready to open, but haven't done so yet, then it's semi-safe to move the plant, and you can probably do so without a problem.  But if it has two inches of soft new growth, do not move the plant at this time.
